The Atlantic salmon has always been regarded as one of the most prized catch by anglers and it prevails on Anticosti. There are 24 salmon rivers on the island and all of them share the attributes any enthusiast fly angler looks for : very few other fishermen (we guarantee a maximum of 8 fishing rods a day for the length of our private river), a limpidity of the water and salmon known for being vigorous and plentiful, all of this in truly breathtaking surroundings.

Safari Anticosti owns the exclusive exploitation rights to the Rivière-aux-Saumons, which is located on the north-east side of the island. The Safari Lodge sits directly at its river mouth and offers spectacular views of both the river and the Atlantic ocean. The Rivière-aux-Saumons runs for approximately 59 km and even though it is one of the few rivers of the island harboring a darker coloration, its clarity affords an excellent visibility. There are 16 pools from which it is possible to fish, dispersed over 30km.

The Atlantic salmon fishing season usually starts on June 15th and ends on September 15th. Fly-fishing is the only type of fishing allowed on the Rivière-aux-Saumons, according to the current legislation. It is also possible to catch some brook trouts (also called "speckled trouts").

If you are beginning to fly-fish, our experienced guides will happily show you the basic techniques, knots and any tips to improve your casts. We have all the necessary fishing equipment at the lodge (waterproof boots, waders, fishings rods, flies etc.) for anyone who doesn't have their own. Fly-fishing is a much more technical and intricate activity than traditional line fishing, which requires all the angler's attention but it can be learned quickly and the experience of being fully immersed in nature makes it a truly stimulating practice. It's easy to get hooked !
